DPF particulate filter cleaning

Kipp Umwelttechnik cleans particulate filters (DPF) under the FilterMaster brand

Kipp Umwelttechnik cleans filters of all types and sizes gently, effectively and quickly.

The quality and efficiency of the “FilterMaster for cars” cleaning process are convincing. As no cutting or welding work is required, the entire housing, including the piping, remains unweakened. Previous cleaning processes for passenger car diesel particulate filters (DPF) are therefore no longer up to date and are not competitive in terms of value retention. The process also differs significantly from cleaning processes that rinse particle filters with water or water-based or other chemicals. Water can penetrate the porous “washcoat” in which the catalytically active metal particles are located. “FilterMaster for cars”, on the other hand, works with purified compressed air to which an active ingredient component in the per mille range is added as an aerosol for a short time.

The active ingredient component is non-toxic and, apart from the unpleasant taste, is even drinkable. Damage to the catalytically active surfaces by the active ingredient component is excluded according to all knowledge and experience. The harmlessness of the process for soot particle filters has been proven – among other things by a process test at the University of Paderborn, which showed no negative effects of the “drinkable chemistry” on the catalytic activity of the diesel particle filter. The story began in 2011 as part of a two-year funding project, in which Kipp Umwelttechnik and the University of Paderborn were involved, to develop a process for cleaning DPFs without removing or separating the inlet/outlet lines to the filter. This funding project laid the foundation for the subsequent successful joint development of “FilterMaster for cars”.

The advantages of the “FilterMaster for cars” process extend to several areas:

  • Fully or semi-automated cleaning minimizes sources of error
  • The clean and gentle cleaning maintains the filter’s catalysis capability
  • Cleaning without separation and welding work maintains the quality of the filter housing
  • Risks of damage such as sintering during the firing process at temperatures from 550° are avoided, as the filters are dried at significantly lower temperatures after the cleaning process
  • The fast cleaning times reduce the downtime of the vehicle
  • The costs for filter cleaning are reduced
