Cleaning cold stores

Application examples from the food industry

Kipp Umwelttechnik GmbH cleans all types of heat transfer systems in the food industry using equipment from its sister company mycon GmbH.

The JetMaster combination system also removes massive residues from sensitive slats.

Cleaning cold stores

We clean cold stores at sub-zero temperatures down to -36°C.

Cold store cleaning with our certified cleaning process.

Advantages of environmentally friendly cold store cleaning with our CSC 8000 cleaning agent:

  • Cleaning takes place without switching off the cooling
  • No need to remove the goods from storage
(approx. 40% open space in the cold store is required for moving the goods)
  • No interruption of the cold chain
  • Use of a food-safe cleaning concentrate
developed with the support of Paderborn University
  • Undiluted, the cleaning concentrate can be used down to -60°C

We can also clean the finned heat exchangers in the cold store area in an environmentally friendly way using our patented JetMaster process. In addition to considerable energy savings, hygienically perfect exchanger surfaces are also achieved.

In cold stores, soiling quickly occurs on the floor surfaces due to transportation by forklift truck or pallet truck. The pallets with the goods to be cooled must be transported into the cold store from the outside. Dirt on the wheels of the forklift trucks cannot be avoided.

This dirt freezes and builds up. This creates a current need for cleaning. Naturally, cleaning cannot be carried out with water at sub-zero temperatures of up to 30°C if the temperature of the cold store is not brought above 0°C. However, the refrigerated goods must be removed from storage beforehand. If several cold stores are available, the refrigerated goods can possibly simply be relocated. The cold store can then be brought to a temperature above 0°C by switching off the cooling and cleaned conventionally with water and detergent. However, simply lowering the cold store temperature again after cleaning results in considerable costs. Added to this is the time required to transfer the refrigerated goods.

It is even more complicated if there is only one cold store. A refrigerated container must then be rented for the cleaning period, which must first be brought down to the right temperature before the refrigerated goods can be transferred. Once the dirty cold store has been cleaned, its temperature must be reduced accordingly before it can be re-stored. The total costs for cleaning a small cold store of approx. 50 m2 can be calculated including Personnel and rental costs for the refrigerated container can easily exceed a mid-four-figure sum.

In cooperation with its sister company mycon GmbH, Kipp Umwelttechnik GmbH has developed a special cleaner that is compatible with foodstuffs and has a high cleaning effect at sub-zero temperatures of at least 30°C. With certain applications, it is even possible to clean at even lower temperatures. The chilled goods remain in the cold store during the cleaning work. Cleaning is carried out in a detailed, prescribed and patent-pending process in which the consumption quantities are precisely specified. Late consequences such as the possible formation of explosive mixtures if the cold store is switched off at a later date when temperatures rise above 0°C are therefore ruled out.

Kipp Umwelttechnik GmbH offers not only an effective cleaner but also an overall concept. This overall concept is constantly monitored. This prevents the stored refrigerated goods from being damaged. Every cleaning is documented and the data is stored.

Kipp Umwelttechnik GmbH has had cleaning agents and processes tested and certified by Wessling GmbH, Hanover. With around 1200 employees, Wessling is one of the leading companies for consulting, analysis and testing on the market. The process developed by Kipp Umwelttechnik GmbH and the cleaning agent used by Kipp Umwelttechnik GmbH – also a proprietary development of Kipp Umwelttechnik GmbH and mycon GmbH – were classified by Wessling as safe for the food sector and approved in conjunction with the operating instructions of Kipp Umwelttechnik GmbH.

Every customer in the food sector has the security and proof to customers and authorities that a cold store cleaning carried out by Kipp Umwelttechnik GmbH or its partner companies meets all safety and food law requirements.

Cleaning cooling towers

The pipes in the cooling tower were occasionally fed with calcareous water. As a result, an armor of hard limestone had developed around the pipes. The JetMaster combination system successfully cleaned the outer surfaces of the pipes. Zinc coating – which had already been destroyed by previous chemical cleaning – is not attacked by JetMaster.

The entire JetMaster combination system (incl. JetPower) is used to clean surfaces with limescale residues. You can find more information on the JetMaster combination system on the JetMaster product page of our sister company mycon GmbH.

Kipp Umwelttechnik uses the JetMaster cleaning system with optimized compressed air in the food industry and other sensitive areas.

For specific industrial cleaning applications where exceptionally clean compressed air is required, Kipp Umwelttechnik offers a high-quality two-stage filtration system that delivers condensate-free air.

Challenges and Solutions

Unfiltered compressed air can contain various contaminants such as:

  • Solid particles (dust, rust)
  • Moisture from condensation
  • Oil and other lubricants from the compressor or environment

Our Solution: Two-Stage Filtration

  1. First Stage:
    • Particle Filtration: Effectively removes larger particles from the compressed air.
    • Moisture Reduction: Separates condensation before it reaches the blasting equipment.
  2. Second Stage:
    • Fine Filtration: Eliminates finer particles and aerosols for even purer compressed air.
    • Oil Separation: Removes oil particles and aerosols originating from the compressor or the environment.

Result: Condensate-Free Air

Through this two-stage filtration, we achieve a compressed air quality for our cleaning equipment that is free from condensates. This means:

  • Higher Cleaning Efficiency: Improved air quality leads to consistent and optimal cleaning results.
  • Hygiene: Especially important for applications in sensitive areas such as the food industry, where clean, dry, and oil-free air is essential.

With our two-stage filtration, we offer you the ability to meet even the most demanding requirements. Since our external filtration is only used in specific areas and otherwise stored cleanly and securely, Kipp Umwelttechnik ensures the consistent maintenance of the required air quality.
